0Valerie Sparks (1961– ) is a Melbourne based artist who creates large-scale printed works and immersive installation environments. She has completed a Masters of Fine Art at Monash University, Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Anthropology and Pacific Studies, Honours in Anthropology, and a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Drawing. The traces of her studies are effortlessly interwoven into her practice in surprisingly and incredibly innovative ways, with a particular focus on exploring historical collections and archives.

This photograph is a result of her current tenor as an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at the Monash Immersive Visualisation Platform at the New Horizons Research Centre where she has access to cutting-edge 3D mapping technology and the opportunity to work with engineers and scientists. The technology is capable of scanning complex interiors and exteriors previously un-mappable by fixed scanners. It is a project that recognises scientists and artists ask different questions which can enhance each other’s understanding of technology and its potential.

Sparks has no preconceived notion about what may eventuate from her point-cloud explorations. Her desire is to create an immersive visual field so the viewer becomes part of the image space. The outcome, as she puts it, is unknown.

Sparks has received numerous awards including the Australia Council London Residency, the French Embassy Cite Des Arts Studio in Paris, the City of Port Phillip Rupert Bunny Award, Australia Council New Work funding, and Arts Victoria International Program funding.

Sparks had a solo exhibition at MGA Allusion & Illusion: the fantastical world of Valerie Sparks (2018), won the 2016 Bowness Photography Prize, and has been a finalist in the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award, the Fremantle Print Award, Tidal, and the Hutchins Art Prize. Sparks is an MGA Collection artist and her work is also represented in public collections including National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and Art Bank.
